Joana Mendonça

About Joana Mendonça
I am a Creative Fashion Designer with over eighteen years of comprehensive fashion industry experience, driven by a passion for innovative fashion that empowers and inspires.
My Journey
My fashion career began in 2007 when I founded Joana Mendonca Atelier in Madeira, Portugal, at just 17 years old. What started as a bespoke design studio evolved into something truly unique - by 2012, I had developed an innovative Fashion Centre concept, creating an integrated experience where clients could access custom fashion design alongside beauty and wellness services. This "one-stop destination" approach became the foundation for a thriving business that served high-profile clients and secured major commercial contracts, including designing uniforms for three luxury hotels.
Creative Evolution
In 2019, I pursued my First Class BA (Hons) Fashion Design at the University of Bedfordshire, where I developed my acclaimed "Unsnap Me" collection. This collection became the centerpiece of my final year and later headlined the opening of Madeira Fashion Week 2019, marking a significant milestone in my creative journey.
London Experience & Professional Development
Following graduation, I gained valuable experience with London's luxury fashion scene through strategic placements at prestigious labels. At Nylander Couture, I progressed from collaborative design development to leading independent projects, ultimately being presented as one of their designers. This experience continued through work with high-end labels including CIMONE, where I contributed to artisan finishes and luxury collection development.
Current Work
I combine my entrepreneurial background with luxury brand experience in my current role, where I coordinate sample production for activewear and accessories while managing international supplier relationships across Europe and Asia.
Industry Recognition
My work has been consistently recognised through competitive selections for major fashion shows and design contests. I've been invited as a speaker at the University of Bedfordshire on multiple occasions, sharing insights about building a successful fashion career and the evolution from emerging designer to established industry professional.
Design Philosophy
I believe fashion should be elegant, empowering, and authentic to each individual's vision. Whether creating bespoke pieces or coordinating design projects, I bring a unique combination of creative vision, commercial understanding, and operational excellence developed through nearly two decades of hands-on experience in the fashion industry.
